get over self-doubt and start taking action

Most of us have a ton of dreams and ideas of things that we want to do in order to get our businesses started - but usually some sort of self-doubt or fear gets in the way from us doing what needs to get done.

We overthink, over-analyze and paralyze ourselves from taking action.

We rationalize everything and convince ourselves that we aren’t good enough and that we aren’t ready yet to start taking action.

Here’s the thing - the most common reason that I find is keeping us from taking action is the belief that we need to have it all figured out first because otherwise, the world will watch us fail or we will let people down.

We believe that we need more clarity around our offers, our service, our message and how we are going to execute it all.

We spend our time getting more education, taking more courses, buying more programs, reading more books and adding more and more to our plate.

What happens is that we then end with a list of things we have to do or have to learn which adds to our overwhelm because we get stuck on: what they hell should I be doing next?

It all becomes too much to handle so we end up procrastinating and we procrastinate by learning more. Which of course means we are waiting more.

What I want to do today is help you change that by getting you to get honest with yourself and looking at things in a different way.

Now - a little bit about me first. I am an extreme action taker. I have always been. I am insanely productive human being - so much so that back when I used to work in advertising, my co-workers always told me to slow down because I was going to get a ton of work thrown at me.

I can’t slow down. My brain works fast and I am a fast action taker.

I believe that being an action taker is what has skyrocketed my business so much. I know what I want and I go after things.

I get asked so much how I do it and how I can help others do the same. So I want to break things down for you in way in which - hopefully- by the end of this- you too will become an action taker and will have the steps to make things happen right now.

Also - I created an incredible workbook you will love that's going to guide you through this whole process.

find what drives you

The first thing that you need to get clear about before breaking down what the next steps are or what specifically you want to do is why it is that you want to take action.

Before making it around a specific goal, you want to start by looking at what it is that you want to change. What is the actual reason behind you wanting to take action?

If you are for example dabbling or thinking about becoming an entrepreneur, why is that? Is it because you are tired of your job? Is it because you feel like you have a strong purpose? Is it because you want to make more money? Is it because of freedom?

There are 2 parts to understanding your why:

  1. Your Internal Why
  2. Your External Why

Your Internal Why has to do with the personal reason that you have for taking action that will change your own life.

So for example, it might be about making more money, or proving to yourself that you can do this.

In my case, I always knew that I wanted to become my own boss and part of the reason is that a big fundamental theme in my life has been managing roles between having a career and being a mom.

For me it was important to find a middle ground which would allow me to be both at my best. Being an entrepreneur gave me that opportunity.

So my internal why is around giving my daughters a powerful example of what it means to be a woman that can have it all.

Another internal why is obviously around money. The more money I make, the more freedom I have to do what I want to do. I can buy higher quality things and I can have a lifestyle that is connected with who I am.

Your External Why has to to with the sort of impact you want to make in the world. This is more of a romantic approach to your why and it has to do with what you are doing for others.

Sometimes this why shows up as you get hooked when working for others which means that this external why will show up once you start working with people and seeing the real impact you are making on others.

For me, this is about helping other women step into their purpose and build success in their own lives as well.

Getting clarity on your Internal and External why will be the driving force that will keep you going

Let’s be honest for a second- life is going to happen. Obstacles, personal messes, emotional rollercoasters, all of it.

But the only thing that can truly, honestly keep you focused is knowing what your why is.

I have had thousands of reasons to want to quit, and the reason why I haven’t has been understanding that it’s not an option.

It’s like if you were exhausted from a hike and you could barely walk and then suddenly a tiger came at you, you sure as heck would find the strength in you to run as fast as you can.

Wanting to stay alive is a pretty darn strong why to keep focused. That’s how you want to feel about your why. You want to feel like you have no other choice.

the truth about self-doubt

Once you are clear on your why and you’re like, okay, I’m in - what tends to happen is, we start looking for reasons why we aren’t going to make it.

We start rationalizing and trying to control our dreams and our vision and self-doubt kicks in with full gear.

The truth is that this is rooted in fear. We find external excuses that keep us from taking action because we are scared beyond what we could have imagined.

We tell ourselves we don’t have time, we’re not good enough, it’s already been done before, bla bla bla, because we are scared.

So let’s talk about fear for a moment here. You have to get honest with yourself around the fears that keep on coming up again and again in your life.

What is it that you are really afraid of?

Are you afraid of failing or are you afraid of succeeding?

Because we like to tell ourselves that we are afraid of failure, so we simply don’t act in order not put ourselves through that experience.

The truth is that the people that matter don’t care and the people that care don’t matter.

Meaning - the only person who is really going to care about whether you fail or not is you and the people who are directly dependent on you.

Everyone else? They are on their own journey and in their own  story and worried about their own fears and challenges.

At the end of the day, it’s you who gets to sleep with you every single night. Not anyone else. What you don’t want is to get to the end of your life and be full of regret. Thinking: what if I would have done things differently?

This is your life - not your dad’s, not your friend’s, not the popular girl from your high school’s life. It’s yours and you get to live with the decisions you make.

Not making a decision is also making a decision.

Not taking action because of fear of failure is deciding to stay comfortable and small.

I believe though that the real thing we are scared of isn’t truly failure, but it’s success. We are afraid of our own power. We know that if we were to step in our full, unapologetic, powerful, strong version of ourselves, it means that we would have to let go of the victim mentality and the shrinking that serves us so well.

It's comfortable playing small ya'll!

It’s easy doing what we have been used to be doing every single day. You know for sure you won’t get your heart broken, you know for sure that you will be okay.

But let me ask you: are you here to live an okay life? Are you here to settle? Or are you here to make your life an adventure?

Because I’m here to live my life to the fullest of my potential and to push myself no matter how scary or crazy it might be.

When we are afraid of our power, we then find different excuses to support our perspective.

We tell ourselves that we won’t be able to handle it, we tell ourselves that it’s impossible to be that successful and be a good mom, we start judging people who are rich and have the life we desire. And honestly it’s just your fear creeping in.

you can handle it

What if you did take a chance? What if you did take action and realized that no matter what life is going to throw your way, you can handle it.

If you are here reading this, it means that you have handled everything so far. Why is this time going to be any different?

Listen - you are human - I get where you are because that fear of thinking you won’t be able to handle it is something we have all faced - including me. So what I want you to do is gather all the evidence you have in your life where you have handled it in the past.

  • I was able to graduate cum laude from college with a double major. Handled it.

  • I was able to graduate at the top of my class from one of the toughest MBA programs in Latin America despite the fact that knew nothing about integrals and derivates before. Handled it.

  • I was able to build an online business as an immigrant despite the fact that I knew nothing about building a business online. Handled it.

  • I was able to handle multiple clients with my daughter in my lap. Handled it.

  • I have taken my business to multiple 6 figures in less than 18 months now with 2 daughters. Handled it.

Look for evidence.

I know that there’s a ton of things you have done already that are proof that you can do this. So all of the BS excuses and fears your are telling yourself around success and failure are not true. Just look in the mirror and prove it to yourself.

why not you?

The final fear that is likely keeping you from taking action is thinking who am I.

Who am I to think I can do this. I’m not an expert, I’m not enough, I’m not good enough, I’m not talented enough, I’m not experienced enough bla bla bla.

Let me tell you right now, this, once again, is a lie.

Yet, it’s a lie that is so powerful, it’s the one that is keeping you procrastinating and stuck in self-doubt the most of all.

You think you aren’t enough, so you take more courses to become more professional. You wait until you are ready but you never will be.

I think that a lot of this comes from us comparing ourselves to other people. To looking at others and thinking: wow- look how awesome they are with that big ads social media following or that long list of clients - why would anyone hire me?

The truth is that the reason why people will hire you is because of you. People resonate and connect with what is honest and authentic and real.

For me, I might have people in my audience who want to hear from someone like me - not someone who is making millions of dollars already, but from someone who gets what it’s like starting a business.

Someone that can relate to their fears or their failures or the things that haven’t gone so well because I have just lived a lot of that.

People will relate to you

People will also relate to you. To your story no matter where you are in your journey. You have to remember, we live in a big ass world. There are billions of people out there - millions that need someone exactly like you.

Not me. Not Jane with the million followers. Not Ana with her cute YouTube channel, or Pat with her photos in Bali.

They need you. With your story, your flaws, your experience.

Just to give you perspective - I remember when I began my business online, I discovered that becoming a digital entrepreneur requires a ton of personal development  (surprise, surprise).

So I spent hours studying and learning and eating up everything that was related to personal development. It was all new and I was loving it all.

Now that I’ve done so much in all of these years, when I look back I realize that some of this stuff was really basic. But the thing is, it’s exactly what I needed at the time.

I walk you through this whole process right here:

What are you holding back from sharing?

What are you holding back from sharing because you think that it’s basic or too easy? I want you to remember that for most people out there, this will be amazing to learn.

stop being selfish

The other truth behind this is that by you holding back or telling yourself who am I, or seems like you are being insanely selfish with your information.

You are making this all about you when out there there are people that need to hear what you have to say.

There are people whose lives are miserable in one way or another and here you are with the antidote and crying about how you suck. What are you even doing?

It’s like if you were a Doctor and had a cure for an incredibly painful disease and you aren’t giving people the shot because there’s someone else who has more experience.

But wait - these people aren’t going to the other Doctor, they are in front of you this very minute and you have what they need. Stop. Making. This. About. You.

Yes- I get you want to make money and you are scared of doing things wrong- but what are you waiting for? I’m also going to give you a little secret.

  • You ARE going to get things wrong.
  • You ARE going to have small failures.
  • You ARE going to have clients that don’t get massive results.

We all do.

Those people that you keep on looking up to? They have screwed up a bunch of times. They might not tell you about it but it’s the truth.

The difference is that those failures haven’t stopped them from getting back up.

But you have to keep on going, because you can learn to swim all you want, take all the courses, read hours on swimming, watch 10,000 hours of YouTube videos on swimming.

But the only way you learn to swim is to get in the water.

The only way you get clarity is by taking action.

You don’t increase your value by learning more and sitting there looking pretty.

You increase your value by teaching, having clients and building experience.

If you were to look at what my business looked like when I began, you would laugh. It was the shell of what I have today, but, even then, I was committed to bringing value to my clients.

You create value by making it happen

However the way to bring more value is by living it and experiencing it. As I learned from one client, I brought in my lessons to the next one. Today I have an incredible robust service that is fire and amazing because despite my fears I kept on going.

And yet, I still keep on improving it everyday, looking for ways to give even more value to my clients all the time.

Thinking that it’s not good enough and trying to make it perfect and telling yourself the lie and excuse that the reason you haven’t taken action is that you are a perfectionist and you aren’t ready yet, is just a way to stay comfortable.

Get up, confront the fears and choose to tell them that you refuse to let your life be dictated by lies that your brain is telling you to keep you small.

You are like that elephant that is tied to a small chair and you don’t move because you think that you are tied when the truth is, you are an elephant. Powerful, strong and just waiting to be free.

Once you have clarity around your why and haven’t gotten honest around your fears, that’s when you ask yourself:

Okay, what is it that I really need to be doing?

Having a YouTube channel, 10,000 followers on Instagram, an email list with 1,000 people, blogging 5 times a week. You don’t need all of it.

What you do need is to understand what the basics are. What you do need is to have a foundation that will take you to the next step.

I talk about what these things are right here, but for now I want you to write down all of the things you think you need to do and focus on the ones that you actually want to do.

That's how you get over self-doubt.
